Paul Hitchens asked the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on June 11 to convene a county-backed committee to explore extending natural gas service to Clark Township, saying he has contacted local units with little response and wants a coordinated effort.
Hitchens said he has reached out to township officials and received only one reply (Moran Township) and urged the county and the Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) Gas Commission to take responsibility for moving the project forward. Commissioner Daryl Schroeder said townships in the western part of the county opposed the proposal and that they would not be affected by service to Clark Township. Commissioner Austin Kimberling suggested a regional feasibility study to identify potential grant funding and technical options.
Schroeder proposed scheduling an initial meeting in September in Garfield Township; Chair Mike Patrick directed staff to change the June 25 meeting start time to 3:00 p.m. and to add discussion of the summer meeting schedule to that agenda.
The board did not adopt a formal resolution or motion to create the committee during the June 11 Committee of the Whole; Hitchens asked whether a committee had been formed later in the meeting and said he wished to meet with other townships. Next steps identified during the discussion were a possible regional study and a September meeting in Garfield Township, but no date-specific action or funding commitment was made.
