Residents raise drainage concerns; fire, police and public works report operational updates

During the Sept. 3 council meeting resident Cleve Moore, who lives at 305 S Gordon St, told councilors that recent rainfall and development have uncovered ongoing drainage problems: ditches have been full for over a month and a culvert between S. Gordon and Ocean Pond Road has not seen flow recently.
Fire Chief Matt Ryan presented the department’s monthly call report and said four new volunteers have joined the volunteer fire department. He also reported ordering new batteries for a truck and that radios arrived without chargers (chargers have been ordered).
Police Chief Ed Yarbrough presented the police report, noting a recent uptick in domestic calls and an increase in travelers walking, biking and hiking through Lake Park. He said the two newest police vehicles (Fords) are under manufacturer recall and that a repair is not expected until the second quarter of 2025. Chief Yarbrough said he will conduct a CPR certification/recertification and a Narcan class by the end of September.
Maintenance Supervisor-in-Training Kaleb Rogers said the city’s water pump starter was replaced and that readings had been taken before and after reconnecting to the county supply; he did not have a precise figure for water used while the pump was down. Rogers said contracted labor did not arrive for speed-bump installation on 4H Club Road and the work was rescheduled.
Mayor Sandlin reminded staff to wear masks when spraying. Council asked staff to track drainage issues and follow up on culvert and ditch conditions.
