New Hyde Park trustees say DPW renovation nearing completion; new S.12th parking lot opens

Mayor Christopher Devane opened the July 17 Board of Trustees meeting, where department reports focused on infrastructure and park projects.
Trustee Ed Quinlan, reporting on behalf of the Department of Public Works, said the 12-month DPW renovation is mostly finished. "The new truck garage is mostly complete," Quinlan said; only the garage doors remain to be installed. Work also includes a nearly finished salt shed, poured concrete pads for recyclable transfer and dumpsters, and a renovated existing garage with new electric, heating, and a bathroom. Quinlan said interior work on a new office building is nearly complete and final site work — asphalt paving, curbs, fencing and drainage — was slated to start the week of July 21 with anticipated substantial completion by the end of July and operations beginning in August.
Quinlan also reported sanitation figures for June 2025: 547 total tons of refuse and recycling, including 451 tons of municipal solid waste, 16 tons of newspaper, 20 tons of commingled recyclables, 15 tons of construction and demolition debris and 45 tons of yard waste. He reminded residents of the village’s bulk- and e-waste-collection schedule and cardboard/packaging rules.
The Board heard that the new parking lot at 300 S.12th Street is now open and that construction on a second lot in the same area is under way; that second lot has experienced rain-related delays but was expected to be completed by the end of July. The new playground equipment has been installed and work on the new park is expected to begin once the second parking lot is ready.
Quinlan said the village has been conducting routine tree maintenance and that in June the village and its contractor trimmed dozens of trees and removed several. He noted that residents should request tree services through the MyVNHP app or Village Hall.
Mayor Devane also said the village sustained about $30,000 in vandalism damage at the new DPW site; he thanked staff and contractors for keeping projects on schedule while managing reimbursements and coordination with state and county agencies.
The Board unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the Clerk-Treasurer to advertise for competitive bids for a tree trim and removal contractor to support ongoing maintenance.
The Board was briefed on next steps and target completion windows for the DPW and S.12th projects; no formal changes to project budgets or contracts were announced at the meeting.
