Town of Gay schedules public hearing on property tax mill rate ahead of Sept. 9 meeting

The Town of Gay council set a public hearing on the property tax mill rate for Aug. 22, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., to be held immediately before the town’s scheduled work session.
Council member Watts asked how the mill rate is determined and whether the town could raise it if needed. Sharon Richmond, town clerk, explained that state procedures require multiple public hearings before the council sets a mill rate and that a hearing must occur prior to finalizing the rate at the Sept. 9, 2024 regular meeting. The council agreed to hold the hearing on Aug. 22 and to address rate-setting at the September meeting.
No proposal to change the rate was made during the Aug. 12 meeting and no dollar figures or rate proposals were presented; the action at the Aug. 12 meeting was scheduling the required public hearing and clarifying the timeline for rate-setting.
