Gillsville council holds first reading for Hawkes rezoning, tables Ferguson variance and Frankum Building rental
Summary
During the March 3 meeting the council held a first reading for rezoning the Hawkes property from Agricultural to R-1, discussed a Ferguson variance request (to reduce allowable house size from 1,400 sq ft to 1,200 sq ft) and tabled the Ferguson item until the property owners attend; a proposed church rental of the Frankum Building was similarly tabled.

GILLSVILLE — Land-use matters were a notable portion of the Gillsville Town Council's March 3 meeting.
The council held a first reading on rezoning the Hawkes property on Herbert Segars Road from Agricultural (A) to Residential (R-1). The transcript records the first reading only; no second reading or vote occurred during the meeting.
Mayor Wade Dale briefed the council on the Ferguson property and said the Fergusons are moving forward with plans to build a house on their land as originally planned. The Fergusons reportedly are seeking a variance to build a 1,200-square-foot house on two acres rather than a 1,400-square-foot house. Mayor Dale said attorney David Syfan advised that granting a variance would follow the same procedural steps as rezoning — a first reading, a second reading and a vote — and that a variance must be posted on the property.
Council Member Jeff Perry moved to table further discussion of the Ferguson variance until the Fergusons are present; Ricky Sutton seconded and the council voted unanimously to table the matter.
Separately, the person or group seeking to rent the Frankum Building for a church event was not present; the council tabled consideration of that rental request.
Next steps: The Hawkes rezoning will proceed through the council's reading process (no dates specified in the meeting record). The Ferguson variance will be taken up again only after the applicants appear before the council.
