Gillsville council approves $10,000 tree-cutting contract, defers Hall County ballfield request

GILLSVILLE, Ga. — The Gillsville Town Council on May 12 unanimously approved a $10,000 contract to remove trees along the access road and near the tennis courts at Town Park, and said it will seek more information before acting on a proposal from Hall County to maintain and reserve the park’s ball fields.
At the start of the meeting, Mayor Wade Dale recorded attendance and Kody Rylee gave the invocation. During new business, councilors considered a proposal presented by Zack Propes described in the agenda as a “Hall County Proposal” in which Hall County would maintain the ball fields in exchange for exclusive use for Hall County activities. Council members said they needed additional details; Mayor Dale said he will invite Mr. Propes to the next council meeting to provide more information.
The most immediate action approved was tree removal. Mayor Dale reported two written estimates for cutting trees on the right side of the road leading to the tennis courts and the area extending to the courts: Eddie Hazelgreen quoted $10,000 and Archie Mchugh quoted $16,000 (both estimates included spreading wood chips). Council Member Ricky Sutton moved to accept Eddie Hazelgreen’s $10,000 estimate; Kody Rylee seconded, and the motion carried with all council members present voting in favor.
Councilors also discussed plans to renovate the tennis courts and whether to convert one or more courts for pickleball. They identified nonworking lights as one barrier and agreed to prioritize removal of trees before starting court repairs. Ricky Sutton is tasked with gathering estimates for court repair and renovation; Mayor Dale said he will request an estimate from GA Power for additional lighting.
The council did not take a final position on the Hall County proposal and deferred the item pending additional information from the proponent. The council adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
