Whigham council amends FY 2023/24 budget to cover $14,901 police repairs overage; applies ECG settlement to education fund

The Whigham City Council unanimously approved a budget amendment at its Oct. 14 meeting to cover a $14,901 overage in the Police Department’s Repairs and Maintenance account.
Mayor Trey Gainous said the audit revealed the overage and that more Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue had been received from the Department of Revenue than anticipated; the council voted to use those additional LOST receipts to make up the shortfall. Council member Robert Porter moved to adopt the amended budget; Council member Andrew Walden seconded, and all members present voted in favor.
Separately, the council received a year-end settlement form from ECG and voted to apply the difference as a credit to the ECG education, training and development fund rather than taking a reimbursement check, following prior practice described by Mayor Gainous. Jim Sellers moved and Robert Porter seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
