Mayor Trey Gainous told the council the county had agreed to raise the city's share to $678,300, up from the current allotment of $342,000. He said the county would collect the special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST) proceeds and distribute each entity’s portion under the intergovernmental agreement, and he emphasized the change "would be put to vote in November on Election Day and would not be set in stone until it was voted on and passed by the voters."
Councilmember Jimmie Laing moved to approve the allocation and permit the mayor to sign the agreement; Robert Porter seconded. All four members present — Mayor Trey Gainous, Mayor Pro Tem Jim Sellers, Jimmie Laing and Robert Porter — voted in favor and the motion carried.
The council did not discuss specific projects tied to the additional funds at the meeting. City Clerk Rachel Jenson was present for the administrative record. The approval at this meeting authorizes the mayor to execute the intergovernmental agreement but does not spend funds; the allotment will only be realized if voters approve the SPLOST on the November ballot.
At the end of the meeting the council moved on to routine municipal matters and then adjourned at 9:14 a.m.
