The Whigham City Council on Dec. 9 directed staff to pursue a resolution to make Depot St SE a one-way street as a safety measure.
Mayor Trey Gainous brought the prior discussion back to the agenda. City Clerk Rachel Jenson said she had contacted the city attorney, who advised the council could effect a change by resolution but that the council needed to define the one-way limits. Chief Tony Black recommended making "the entire Depot St SE one-way all the way to Lee Ave," citing safety concerns.
Jim Sellers moved that the clerk request the city attorney draft a resolution to change Depot St SE to a one-way street all the way to Lee Ave SE; Robert Porter seconded. According to the minutes, all members present voted in favor and the motion carried.
The action directs the clerk to initiate the legal drafting process; the council did not vote on the final ordinance or install signage at the Dec. 9 meeting. Any future resolution or ordinance will require formal adoption and, depending on its contents, coordination with public works and law enforcement for implementation and signage placement.
