Bolton Fire Commission reviews overdose calls and equipment updates, appoints officers

The Bolton Fire Commission convened on July 24, 2023, at the Bolton Fire House and on Zoom. Fire Chief Bruce Dixon told commissioners the department responded to two drug overdose calls and one alcohol-related overdose that together resulted in two deaths and reported a motor vehicle crash at Vernon Road and Route 44 in which a volunteer traffic-control firefighter was struck and taken to Hartford Hospital.
The chief also reported that the 2022–23 budget year has closed, some funds were returned to the town and transfers were made. He said the department purchased four rear tires for the rescue vehicle and 10 tires for the tanker.
Chief Dixon provided an update on the department’s new Engine Tank 134, saying the vendor Firematic had posted photos with a paperwork typo listing the truck as "Bolton, NY"; Dixon confirmed the vehicle belongs to Bolton and said the delivery date has been moved to sometime in October 2023. He said he will forward further updates to the commission.
Dixon announced several Bolton Volunteer Fire Department officer appointments, including Matthew Perreira (C234), James DeMorro (C334), Daniel Ross (C534), Jason Vincent (C634), Melissa LeGeyt (C734) and Safety Officer Peter Morra (Car 1034).
On personnel matters, Chief Dixon informed the commission that Deputy Fire Chief Michael Emerita will be stepping down for personal reasons. The commission voted to accept the recommendation of Matthew Perreira as a candidate for Deputy Fire Chief until the department holds its own vote in August 2023 (motion moved by Robert Langton; seconded by Elizabeth Malone; recorded as unanimous where noted).
Procedural business included adding the election of officers to the meeting agenda by motion (moved by Robert Langton; seconded by Danny Moquin) and approval of the June 26, 2023 meeting minutes. The commission also moved to accept the slate of officers for the Fire Commission — Chairman John Morianos, Secretary Robert Langton and Treasurer Elizabeth Malone — as recorded in the minutes.
Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call reported a quiet month for the Fire Marshal’s office and listed recent activities and inspections, including a plan review for 271 Hop River Road, a meeting about school door issues at Bolton High School scheduled for July 25, and inspections at several local churches, the Bolton Ice Palace, the Bolton Fire Station and a tent inspection at 295 West Street.
The commission scheduled its next meeting for September 25, 2023, and noted there will be no meeting in August. The meeting was adjourned at 7:36 p.m.
