Bolton Fire Commission notes school-door violations, chief reports 43 calls; new truck due in October

Bolton Fire Commission Chairman John Morianos convened the regular meeting at 7:00 P.M. on May 22, 2023, at the Bolton Fire House and via Zoom. Members in attendance were John Morianos, Chris Moquin, Danny Moquin and Robert Langton; Elizabeth Malone attended via Zoom. Fire Chief Bruce Dixon and Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call were also present; James Rupert was absent.
Chief Bruce Dixon told the commission the department had responded to 43 emergency calls since the last meeting, including an assist in Manchester involving a boat. He said all apparatus have completed pump and Department of Transportation testing, several trucks will need new tires, and hose and ladder testing is scheduled for May 23. Chief Dixon also reported ongoing purchase orders and budget transfers to close out the fiscal year and noted the department’s annual banquet was held April 30 at Georgina’s, where several members received awards.
Lieutenant James DeMorro was named Fire Officer of the Year; Firefighter Steve Clark was named Firefighter of the Year; EMT Amanda Gallacher received the EMS Award of the Year; Deputy Chief Mike Eremita received a brass trumpet and plaque recognizing 55 years of service; and Chief Dixon received a plaque marking 10 years of service in the state and town.
Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call provided his report of recent activity and inspections. He listed duties and meetings (Knox box installations, a CRFMA meeting in Manchester, mandatory town-hall diversity training, and a meeting with the owner of 890 Boston Turnpike) and summarized recent inspections: Town Hall (more inspections scheduled), 666 Boston Turnpike (four inoperative smoke detectors), three burn permits and inspections, a fire-door inspection at 10 and 14 Carpenter Road, apartment inspections at a Landie Construction project, and unannounced inspections at both Bolton Center School and Bolton High School. Call said the unannounced school inspections and a Connecticut state report revealed violations related to interior doors and magnetic hold-open devices; he requested a meeting with the two principals and Superintendent Kristen Hecht to discuss the report and required corrections.
Under correspondence, Chairman Morianos reported receipt of a letter from Chip White nominating Bruce Dixon as Fire Chief and Michael Eremita as Deputy Fire Chief for the coming year. The commission approved the April 24, 2023 meeting minutes on a motion from Commissioner Danny Moquin, seconded by Commissioner Robert Langton; the motion carried unanimously.
In old business, Chief Dixon said the department expects to place a newly ordered fire truck into service in Bolton around October. Bills were circulated and discussed briefly. No items were raised under new business.
The commission scheduled its next regular meeting for June 26, 2023. A motion to adjourn, made by Chairman John Morianos and seconded by Robert Langton, carried unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 7:39 P.M. The minutes were signed and respectfully submitted by Board Clerk Janet K. Assard.
