Thomaston staff outlines master-plan work, GTIB pursuit and National Register updates; March meeting moved

City Economic Development Director Taylor J. Smith updated the Historic Preservation Commission on several items under "other business" at the Feb. 2 meeting.
Smith said he was attempting to reschedule a campus visit from the University of Georgia College of Environment and Design and Clemson University students who will participate in a master-plan process for the East Thomaston Redevelopment area; scheduling remained in flux. He also said the city intends to pursue funding through the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) program for planned Downtown pedestrian-safety and streetscape improvements that were designed in partnership with the University of Georgia College of Engineering in 2026.
On historic-recognition work, Smith reported updates on two National Register proposals: the Lee District full application was expected to receive feedback from the Historic Preservation Division on Feb. 6, and the Downtown Thomaston District nomination was still in progress by consultants Ethos Preservation. Smith asked commissioners to approve moving the March meeting from March 2 to March 9 because of a scheduling conflict; Rev. James McGill moved the change, Ted Kandler seconded and the commission carried the motion unanimously.
