Hamilton departments report post-hurricane recovery, equipment needs and upcoming events

City staff reported on water-system assessments and rate considerations, street repairs, police and fire operations after the hurricane, vehicle losses, equipment acquisitions, training and upcoming community events including Trunk-or-Treat Oct. 24.
City staff used the Oct. 14 meeting to update the council on recovery from a recent hurricane, equipment needs and community events.
Ben (water/sewer) told the council the service line inventory has been submitted, that several older radio-read meters (about 15 years old) will need replacement, and that staff is considering a $3.00 increase to water rates. He reported a small leak outside City Hall and said precautions taken during the hurricane prevented loss of solids at the treatment plant; a few meters and one pouring pump were affected.
Terrence said General Electric repaired outlets on the square except for one pole and that only one tree fell on Hill Street during the storm.
Chief Weiss reported the homecoming parade went well, thanked Terrence for assistance, and said the department plans to use fencing rather than barricades at the Christmas parade to increase safety. He said dash-cam footage from a crash involving a 2020 Ford Expedition was turned over to the Georgia State Patrol and the crash was found not to be the city’s fault; the department has acquired a 2024 Chevrolet Colorado expected to be in service by mid-November. Chief Weiss stated the department is "now the busiest police department in the county."
Assistant Chief Cooper reported 16 calls in the last 30 days, that the new fire truck is in service and appeared in the homecoming parade, that four firefighters are attending county Firefighter I training, and that the department will provide water services for the Mike and Tracy Arena rodeo. He also mentioned a Trunk-or-Treat event on Oct. 24 and noted parking problems in front of the fire station bay.
Rhett Wade reported the city’s software migration was delayed by the hurricane but staff is catching up. Wade also said Hamilton met the lead service-line submission deadline; a report will appear in next week’s paper.
