Hogansville will move forward on Royal Theater spire but balks at costly door bid

At a Jan. 6 Hogansville work session, staff presented bids for two remaining Royal Theater items and the council agreed to move forward with the spire replacement while expressing concern about the cost of front-door replacement.
The low spire bid from Sign Store was reported at $99,228. The city has a 50/50 grant for the spire, and Ray Colemon informed staff he would donate $35,000 in memory of his late wife; with those funds the memorandum asked the council to expect a city share of roughly $14,614 for the spire.
For the doors, staff reported a single bid from Principle Construction totaling $120,523 and noted $34,000 in available grant funding from Fox Gives for the doors, leaving an estimated shortfall of $86,523. Staff additionally reported hardware costs of about $30,000 and said combined additional funding needed for the doors and spire is about $101,137 while remaining Royal Theater construction funds total $127,496.
Council members said they were comfortable approving the spire bid under the grant-and-donation scenario but were "not comfortable with the bid for the doors" as presented; both the spire and doors items were added to the Regular Meeting agenda for action tonight.
The work session recorded the council's direction to place both bids before the full council for a vote; no final contract award was recorded in the work-session minutes.
