ARB approves village‑center sign for South High Street storefront, bars out‑of‑scale rendering

The New Albany Architecture Review Board voted March 9 to grant a certificate of appropriateness for a single wall sign for a South High Street storefront in the village center, with conditions about lighting and the sign permit submittal.
Staff reported the proposed sign measures 120 inches by 23.78 inches (about 19.8 square feet), is a sandblasted wood panel with raised wood lettering and a navy background with white lettering, and meets code and the village’s architectural character. The applicant does not propose lighting at this time.
Board members raised concerns that a rendering in the packet was not to scale and asked for a corrected elevation for the record. One board member recommended omitting the out-of-scale rendering from the sign permit application and relying on shop drawings instead. The board approved the certificate with the proviso that any lighting is subject to staff approval and that the inaccurate rendering not be included in the permit submittal. The motion passed 6–0.
Kaylee Catahiner, who introduced herself as the applicant’s representative and chief of staff, said the applicant plans a grand opening on Thursday and therefore chose to defer final decisions about lighting for now. “We have our grand opening on Thursday,” Catahiner said.
A board member asked whether staff would return the application to the board if proposed lighting were outside the ordinance; staff replied that lighting within code could be handled administratively.
