At its May 6 meeting the Hobart Board of Public Works and Safety approved a slate of routine items and local requests.
The board unanimously accepted the April 15, 2026 minutes and signed the register of claims and payroll. It approved temporary sign placement for the Hobart YMCA’s Brickyard Run, directing coordination with the Building Department.
Several tree-removal matters in public easements were approved after Public Works relayed the City Arborist’s recommendations: the homeowner at 109 S. Wabash St. may remove three of four silver maples at their expense and was instructed not to plant additional trees in the easement; at 48 N. Guyer St. the board approved City removal of a tree more than 80% dead and allowed the homeowner to remove the other tree at their expense; and the board approved City removal of a split tree at 2753 Cypress Ln.
The board accepted warranty deeds for parcels 18, 34 and 35 for the Hickey Street Improvement Project. A sidewalk-repair petition for 2669 E. 62nd Place in Merrillville Heights was continued to the May 20 meeting so staff can assess an area near a water shutoff valve where 3–4 inch rises/drops were observed. The agenda item requesting tree removal at 733 Lincoln St. was removed prior to the meeting because the tree had already been removed.
Assistant Police Chief Pochran also announced targeted enforcement for electric bicycles and said the first two citations were issued that day. Mayor Huddlestun listed upcoming community events, including a parks clean-up and a ribbon cutting for the new HoBark Dog Park.
The board adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
