Fort Recovery Council approves cemetery rule changes requiring vaults for cremains

At its Jan. 5 meeting, the Village of Fort Recovery Council approved updated cemetery lot prices and new rules that require cremated remains to be placed in urns or containers set inside a vault made of stone or metal.
Minutes state the cemetery board adjusted lot prices and revised rules to require that brass or concrete/ granite urns be set inside a vault to prevent damage to lighter containers. Cardboard and plastic urns remain prohibited under the updated rules. Luke Knapke moved to approve the new prices and rules and Greg Schmitz seconded; the motion passed by unanimous recorded vote.
The change was presented as a measure to protect interments from disturbance; the minutes do not record public comment on the item. The update will be incorporated into the cemetery board’s published rules and fee schedule.
