CCASD reports show strong service learning, online enrollment numbers and new gifted education plan

District staff used the April 10 board meeting to highlight student programs, enrollment figures and curriculum work that will shape the coming year.
Chief Education Officer Dave Dirksen reported administrative steps including a draft Gifted Education Scope & Sequence for submission to the Arizona Department of Education. John Phelps, Director of Exceptional Student Services, said the district’s Quarter 3 special education counts were Ponderosa: 9, Tse' Yaato: 7 and CCASD Online: 4, and that 13 of 20 students completed AZELLA reassessments required this cycle; he also said he is preparing for a programmatic site visit on April 30, 2025.
Ponderosa High School highlights (relayed by staff) included nearly 1,600 native grasses planted at NAU’s greenhouse for later restoration on the Navajo Nation, student visits to Wupatki and Sunset Crater for place-based learning, preparing nearly 600 sandwiches for the Flagstaff Food Center, and an educational visit to the county treasurer’s office featuring Treasurer Sarah Benatar. Tse' Yaato' Principal Traci Parker reported Spring Quarter online enrollment of 29 students (including two special-education students), Q3 exam pass rates with 70% of students passing all four classes, and a 90% FAFSA completion rate among graduates to date.
Staff also reported grant activity: Mr. Dirksen said the district has been pursuing the Small Rural Schools Grant for 2025–26 and Ms. Parker said Tse' Yaato' submitted an ACF grant application for a greenhouse. Ms. Morton said she met with Edmentum to review new CTE courses and online pathways and is coordinating a community day on April 24 for online students.
What remains: staff noted continued grant outreach and curriculum work, and the district will hold public hearings in May on the Instructional Time Model. The minutes show no public commenters at this meeting.
