Centerville approves UPS temporary parking and event permit; council hears SRO candidate introduction

At the July 29 work session Centerville’s council approved several routine but locally consequential items: temporary parking for a UPS renovation, a community event permit for a Coast-to-Coast cancer ride, and heard a presentation introducing a candidate for a school resource officer role.
Representatives explained that UPS will begin parking-lot work and concrete staging imminently and asked to use a grass lot and part of the water tower parking for temporary staging, provided a lane is left open for access. The council voted to approve that request with conditions discussed during the meeting.
Council also approved a request from an organizer for the Coast-to-Coast cancer ride to use a corner/staging area on Sept. 26 at about 8 a.m. with about 15 riders and four vans; the council asked staff to coordinate key-holder arrangements and scheduling.
On school safety, the council discussed SRO staffing and introduced Garrett Sweetie as a candidate. Meeting comments noted Sweetie’s prior SRO experience at Mission Community Schools for roughly 3½ years and described him as "Tier 1 certified"; the transcript records introduction and positive remarks but does not include a formal hire or vote on appointment during the session.
The meeting concluded with routine departmental updates and the council setting the next regular meeting for Aug. 12, 2025.
