Heber-Overgaard board delays athletic director hire after widespread community support for candidate

Board President Tim Leedy moved on March 17 to table the Athletic Director agenda item until the board’s April 14 meeting after extensive public comment supporting the recommended candidate, Josh Edwards. The motion to postpone passed with one recorded oppose from board member John Piva.
Dozens of community members and school staff addressed the board during Call to the Public, telling trustees they had personal and professional experience with Edwards. Tim Slade, a retired educator who previously served as principal in the district, said the hiring committee conducted due diligence and recommended Edwards. Tiffany Martineau, who served on the hiring committee, told the board the majority recommended Edwards after a thorough interview process and that Edwards acknowledged areas for growth and plans to pursue a CTE teaching certificate if needed.
Several current and former coaches and teachers described Edwards’ volunteerism, work with youth programs and classroom involvement. Sharon Baker, Special Education Teacher and Special Education Director, said she had observed Edwards’ classroom participation, attendance at athletic events and volunteer leadership and recommended him as fair and dedicated. Edwards addressed the board directly and outlined a plan emphasizing competitive teams, clearer expectations for coaches, stronger parent communication and alignment with district policies.
Trustees said they wanted the board packet to include complete documentation before taking a final vote. Board President Tim Leedy moved to continue the item to the April 14, 2026 regular meeting so the trustees would have the full hiring materials; the motion was seconded by Craig Blackburn and carried with one oppose (John Piva). The item will be brought back with complete supporting materials in April.
