At a July 9 Tree Allies meeting in Clermont, urban forestry specialist Chris Flannigan advised members that private trees should be evaluated by a certified arborist before removal and that property owners must be notified and given time to trim potentially hazardous trees.
"If it is a private tree, we need to have an arborist assess the tree," said Chris Flannigan, urban forestry for IN. He added that owners are typically given "30–60 days to trim the tree" and that his approach emphasizes working with homeowners to maintain a positive relationship.
The guidance came as members discussed four specific locations in town that may need tree work. Mike Beam reported that Larry Beiter will meet with a tree service to review those sites and that Beam had drafted an email outlining the Tree Allies' recommended response for each location. To reduce repeated group emails, members agreed to form a small assessment team; Bernie Denning and Heidi Boyle volunteered to carry out initial site visits.
Flannigan gave a brief tutorial on using GIS to determine property boundaries and ownership, and said Urban Forestry can undertake work on Crawfordsville Road and on Tansel Road. He also noted he can perform similar services as an independent contractor for other local sites if needed.
The group did not record any formal vote on the assessments during the meeting; the next steps recorded were the planned site visit by Larry Beiter with a contracted tree service and the volunteer assessments by Bernie Denning and Heidi Boyle. The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
