Police chief reports new hire unresponsive; council to search consortium for part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a recently approved new hire has not responded to attempts at contact and the chief assumes the person is no longer interested.
"He said he has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice reported. He said there are only 32 candidates on the consortium list and that he plans to contact the consortium, check with the Civil Service Commission about setting up oral exams and send letters to candidates.
Pernice said his staffing preference is to hire two part-time officers, but only one part-time officer position was approved by council. Council agreed to proceed with a search for one part-time officer and asked the chief to follow Civil Service Commission procedures for examinations and notifications.
No formal motion or vote on hiring was recorded at the meeting; the chief’s update was entered as an informational personnel item and as direction to proceed with advertised hiring steps and Civil Service Commission coordination.
