Town of Homer recognizes long-serving officials; DDA outlines park, events and beautification plans

The Town of Homer honored long-serving municipal staff and officials and heard a Downtown Development Authority (DDA) update during its Dec. 9 meeting.
Tracey King was recognized for 25 years of service. Sandra Garrison was recognized specifically for 23 years as a council member. The minutes note that Doug Cheek was recognized for 37 years as a council member and as mayor since 1988.
DDA Chair Rick Billingslea reported that the breakfast with Santa fed about 150 children and that roughly $15,000 has been spent repairing the church building used as the community center. Kellie Jones summarized proposed 2026 officer nominations (Billingslea as chair, Kazia Guynn secretary, Candace Ayers treasurer, Jones event planner, Katelyn Satterfield sponsoring and fundraising, and Stephanie Reid as school liaison) and outlined plans for park repairs, more picnic tables, an economic-development focus limited by lack of sewer, Friday nights in the park with a portable stage and improved lighting. The DDA also plans committees for park, economic development, festivals, sponsorship and beautification. The minutes indicate a DDA membership item was tabled for a future meeting.
The council then moved into executive session at 7:25 p.m. and reconvened at 8:10 p.m.; the minutes do not disclose executive-session details.
Next steps: DDA scheduled a meeting for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, 8 a.m.–10 a.m. at the church (community center) to plan the coming year.
