Council funds sewer lateral work, schedules workshop as December compliance deadline nears

The Vernon Center City Council moved to shore up funding for sewer lateral replacements and ordered next steps ahead of a year-end compliance deadline.
Clerk Kara Hansen told councilors the 420 Sewer Service Line Project Fund showed a negative balance and that invoices and quotes for sewer lateral replacements total about $31,433.61, including $11,068.61 for work completed at 301 West St. N and additional SSS-financed quotes for two other properties totaling $20,362.00. To avoid a projected negative balance, councilors approved transferring $40,000 from the 607 Sewer Reserves Fund into the 420 account (Resolution 2025-23).
Hansen said she is maintaining an address-level spreadsheet that shows which properties are compliant, noncompliant, require council direction, or need re-televising. She recommended scheduling a sewer lateral workshop in September; the council directed Public Works Supervisor Willette to send his consolidated findings to Acting-Mayor Peterson for review before the council schedules the work study. Hansen reminded the council that the deadline for replacing noncompliant sewer lines is Dec. 31, 2025 and said staff will send letters to affected residents.
Councilors also approved extending seasonal employee Fay Butson’s hours through Sept. 20, with the possibility of extension to Oct. 4 depending on hours used, to ensure sufficient public-works staffing while the lateral work proceeds.
