River Ridge CDD asked to join multi-agency storm-surge resilience planning

PSGRC General Manager Eric Long requested the CDD designate representatives to help coordinate a five-to-ten-year storm-surge resilience action plan after presenting a hypothetical map showing a 10' to 12' surge could flood nearly half the community.
At the Oct. 22 meeting, PSGRC General Manager Eric Long asked the River Ridge CDD to support a multi-year resilience planning effort to address increasing storm-surge risks. Long described an action plan under development and proposed creating an advisory or review panel to coordinate planning and potential partnerships at the state, county and village levels.
Long presented a hypothetical scenario, based on a topographic map, that "a 10' to 12' storm surge could have caused 45% to 55% of the community to be flooded." He said that addressing the issue could take a decade and would likely require coordination with multiple agencies and possible funding sources; he asked the board to designate a board representative and a staff or engineering representative to coordinate when needed.
The board agreed to have Mr. Long and newly appointed Supervisor Keith Merrill assist with the effort and authorized District Engineer Charlie Krebs to help as necessary. No formal funding or specific project was approved at the meeting; the discussion was limited to planning and coordination and a request for the CDD to participate in future discussions and reviews.
Long mentioned the Army Corps of Engineers has presented ideas in neighboring Collier County should funding become available; board members emphasized the need for a plan that addresses both commercial and residential vulnerabilities and noted some mitigation measures (storm panels) might be inadequate without broader, long-term work.
