The Hackberry Elementary School District #3 governing board on Sept. 9 approved revisions to Advisory Policy GCCC-EC (Professional/Support Staff Leaves of Absence Without Pay) to ensure alignment with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993.
Superintendent Christina Ramirez explained key changes: adding a job-restoration clause specifying that employees exercising FMLA options are to be reinstated to their original or equivalent positions; adjusting terminology to replace the prior phrase "most employees" with a clearer standard; and removing language that conflicted with federal provisions about use of accrued benefits during FMLA leave. The board noted that some statutory eligibility thresholds in the policy are not applicable to the district due to its size but remain in the policy because they mirror federal law.
A motion to revise Advisory Policy GCCC-EC was made by Pam Adams, seconded by Valerie Grimes, and passed 3-0. The revised policy is intended to provide clarity and to ensure the district’s policy language does not contradict federal law.
