The Waukesha Transit Commission voted Feb. 5 to adopt recommended bus-stop changes near Lowell Elementary tied to the school district’s route optimization plan.
City staff said the recommended changes would reinstate a corner stop at Michigan and Grandview (near Lowell’s front entrance), remove a nearby stop just south of Michigan by the school entrance that became redundant after routing changes, and eliminate a low-ridership stop on Michigan at Western (south side). "We just recommend eliminating that bus stop. It virtually has no ridership," staff said.
Commissioners asked about student safety and how close the stop sits to the intersection. A commissioner who attends the school drop-off daily described children crossing at that location; staff said the stop is "pretty close to the intersection" and that elementary ridership is minimal during school drop-off times. The commission also asked how much notice the school district receives; staff said the city typically provides a buffer of a couple of weeks when changes go to council and there is not a fixed notice rule.
The motion to accept the changes was moved and seconded and carried on a recorded vote.
Next steps: Staff will provide notification and timing to the school district and implement the stop changes per the approved schedule.
