Superintendent Lizette Esparza and Early College Program Director Homero Chavez told the Governing Board on Sept. 10 that the district’s after-school Early College Program serves about 500 students in grades 4–6 who are taking high-level college math.
The board heard that the program has received attention beyond the region: Chavez said the program was profiled by a visiting journalist and featured on university portals, and that the district was recognized in university and statewide outlets. "The program currently has 500 students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade taking high level college math in the after school tutoring program," Chavez told the board.
The report to the board was given during the superintendent’s remarks and part of the district’s regular updates on student programs. Esparza noted district representation at the Arizona School Boards Association conference and said other superintendents asked about Gadsden’s approaches. The board did not take formal action on the program during the meeting.
Board members praised the program and recognized staff: Esparza congratulated Maria Del Rio and Maria Robles from Cesar Chavez Elementary as employees of the month. The district also noted a published feature and an ASU award that highlighted the district’s work with younger students on college-level material.
The board may address program resourcing or evaluation in future meetings; at this session the discussion was informational and no funding decisions were recorded.
