Statham City Council unanimously approved the purchase of a Public Works grapple truck for $60,000 and held a closed executive session on potential property transactions and legal matters during its May 20 regular meeting at the Statham Community Center.
Councilmember Penn moved to approve the purchase of the grapple truck, and Councilmember Burnette seconded; the motion passed 5-0. The council also approved minutes from the May 6 public hearing/work session and the May 12 special-called meeting by unanimous vote on the consent motions.
Earlier in the meeting, Councilmember Patterson moved to amend the agenda to add two executive-session items: VI.1 to permit discussion or voting to enter into a contract to purchase, dispose of, or lease property (citing O.C.G.A. §50-14-3(b)(1)(D)), and VI.2 to consult with legal counsel under the attorney-client privilege (citing O.C.G.A. §50-14-2(1)). Councilmember Terilli seconded that motion; the council approved the amendment 5-0.
Following those votes, the council voted to enter executive session at 6:41 p.m. and to exit at 6:50 p.m.; both motions passed unanimously. City Attorney Jody Campbell stated after the executive session that “all discussions held during the Executive Session are protected as Attorney/Client Privilege and no votes were conducted during the session.”
The council later adopted a resolution ratifying the closed-session discussions and authorized Mayor Debi Krause to execute an affidavit, filed with the official minutes, confirming that the closed session’s subject matter fell within the statutory exceptions under O.C.G.A. §50-14-3 and O.C.G.A. §50-14-4(b). The affidavit bears the mayor’s sworn statement that the closed portion was devoted to matters within those exceptions.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor Debi Krause at 6:31 p.m.; it adjourned at 6:51 p.m. No further public actions or votes were reported following the executive session.
