Selectmen approve small-scale compost pilot and complete transfer-station compactor project

Kate Tompkins of Chickadee Compost presented a design for a small compost area using totes and solar-powered fans; she said the cure time for piles would be about six to eight weeks and that lids would be provided for totes. The Selectmen gave initial approval for a small space at the transfer station to trial the operation, asking for details about feedstock sourcing and containment to minimize odors and gull attraction.
Separately, TM Billings reported the new compactor at the transfer station was in place and other final bills for the project were expected; town staff said the compactor project remained within expected costs. The board also discussed recycling logistics during the COVID-19 pandemic and approved a modest, under-$1,000 plan to construct a covered bin to resume limited recycling with safety measures.
The board instructed staff to monitor the compost pilot and to work with the contractor on operating procedures and signage.
