Commissioners report Meijer 425 agreement progress; residents press Vedder Road safety concerns

Vice-Chair David Hatfield told the Barry County Board of Commissioners on June 9 that the City of Hastings approved a 425 agreement connected to a proposed Meijer development. Hatfield said Rutland Charter Township will next review the agreement; if the township approves, planning authority would transfer to the Joint Planning Commission for preliminary site review and ordinance actions before returning to the township for final approval.
Commissioner Bob Teunessen and Commissioner Jon Smelker reported resident complaints about manure haulers and tanker trucks operating on Vedder Road at roughly 55 miles per hour. Teunessen said residents are concerned about dust, "chatter bumps" and roadway safety for other users; he and Smelker said they met with the Road Commission and that multiple dust-control treatments have been applied but that vehicle weight and speed appear to be contributing factors. No formal enforcement action or new ordinance was adopted at the meeting; commissioners indicated work with the Road Commission is ongoing.
Other local items raised in commissioners’ reports included Brownfield TIF planning in Middleville, continued praise for Thornapple Manor’s care standards, the Hastings Summer Concert series and a July 4 community celebration in Delton.
The board did not take final action on the 425 agreement or on Vedder Road safety measures during the June 9 meeting; both items remain in the discussion or investigation stage.
