Barry County names new advisory board members, fills mental health consumer seat

The Barry County Board of Commissioners unanimously confirmed a slate of advisory-board appointments during its June 9 meeting in Hastings.
Liz Lenz was appointed to the Materials Management Planning Committee to serve a partial term expiring Nov. 30, 2029. The board then filled two seats on the Barry County Community Mental Health Authority: Leah Lucas was named the member designee and Julie Coon was named the Primary Consumer designee for a partial term expiring March 31, 2027. Commissioners voted to appoint Evan Wisner to the Barry County Veteran's Affairs Committee for a partial term through Dec. 31, 2029, and to appoint Kyle Herp to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a partial term ending March 31, 2027.
Each appointment was moved and seconded on the record and carried by unanimous vote of the board. County staff noted the term expirations on the record when presenting the motions.
The appointments follow a sequence of candidate interviews conducted at the start of the June 9 meeting; applicants who appeared included Liz Lenz, Leah Lucas, Julie Coon, Evan Wisner, Roberto Beltran and Kyle Herp. One applicant, Teri Simpson, was unable to attend.
The new Primary Consumer designee on the Community Mental Health Authority is intended to ensure that a consumer perspective is represented on the board overseeing local mental health programming; the board’s motion specifies the partial-term expiration date but did not include further programmatic directives.
The board’s action completes the staffing of several local advisory panels that advise the county on waste planning, mental health services, veterans’ affairs and zoning appeals.
