Students from Esperanza High School who are members of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) presented their 'Ditch the Drink' campaign to the council, outlining research and community outreach aimed at reducing energy‑drink consumption among teenagers.
The students cited a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention range that they said shows 30–50% of adolescents consume energy drinks frequently and referenced a Frontiers in Public Health paper saying roughly two‑thirds of teenagers have tried energy drinks; they also cited FDA guidance and noted some products can contain 200–300 milligrams of caffeine per serving. Student presenters described local activities including nine workshops, an awareness fundraiser (lemonade stand), social‑media outreach, and a planned article in the Yorba Linda Neighbors magazine; they said their outreach had reached more than 74,000 people to date.
Council members praised the students’ presentation, encouraged them to keep a copy of the magazine article for their resumes, and invited the students to share their social handles ("ditch the drink" on TikTok and Instagram). Council and an Orange County supervisor representative thanked the students for representing the community.
The presentation was a public-education item; no council action was required.
