Bolton Fire Commission reviews recent calls, submits capital budget and adds staff

At its Nov. 25 meeting the Bolton Fire Commission heard that the Bolton Volunteer Fire Department responded to 38 calls since the prior meeting (449 year-to-date), reviewed a capital budget submission, introduced two new staff members and approved its 2020 meeting schedule.
Chairman John Morianos called the Bolton Fire Commission to order at 7:00 P.M. Monday at the Bolton Fire House. The commission approved the minutes from its Oct. 28, 2019 meeting by unanimous voice vote.
Fire Chief Bruce Dixon reported the Bolton Volunteer Fire Department has answered 38 emergency calls since the last meeting, including three motor vehicle accidents, a car fire on I-384, a number of medical calls and two mutual-aid requests, bringing the department’s year-to-date total to 449 calls. Dixon said he has submitted the department’s capital budget requests to the town administrator on Nov. 22, 2019 and is completing the town EMS report due to the state at the end of December.
Dixon introduced two additions to department staff. Pamela Parsons joined the department as a part-time secretary to assist with records retention, and Bill Call was introduced as the new deputy fire marshal and is already conducting inspections. Fire Marshal James Rupert reported that a recent inspection of a group home at 86 Volpi Road did not receive a certificate because several egress deficiencies must be corrected; Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call inspected the Bolton Lake House at 890 Boston Turnpike and will return in 30 days to verify that requested corrections have been made.
Dixon also summarized recent professional engagement, saying he attended meetings of the TCMAFS board, the Eastern Connecticut Fire School board and the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association. He said the new Eastern Connecticut Fire School facility is nearly complete and an open house is planned for April 2020. Dixon told the commission he spoke with First Selectwoman Sandra Pierog about a phase-in stipend package for fire officers; the chief cited a Nov. 6, 2019 letter but did not present implementation details at the meeting.
The commission approved the 2020 meeting dates as amended (the schedule lists meetings on the fourth Monday of each month with exceptions in May and December and no meeting in August). The next commission meeting was set for Dec. 16, 2019. The meeting adjourned at 9:05 P.M.
