Thomaston DDA approves $5,000 façade grant for historic house, adopts Main Street advisory board framework

The Downtown Development Authority voted June 11 to approve a façade grant of up to $5,000 for repairs at the Pettigrew-White-Stamps House museum at 800 S. Church Street.
Upson Historical Society Director Tim Turner and Economic Development Director Taylor Smith told the board the work would replace rotted exterior siding, fascia boards, handrails and deck boards. They said total project costs are anticipated at $10,320 and noted the Certificate of Appropriateness requires the replacement siding to "match" the current beveled-edge detail. Chairwoman Catherine Baity moved to approve the grant; Nancy Lowry seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The board also reviewed updates to the Thomaston Main Street Workplan. Smith described edits made since May, including added tasks, board and staff responsibilities and revised budgets, and asked members to be prepared to provide monthly progress updates. Community & Economic Engagement Manager Colleen Cook presented a proposed framework for a Thomaston Main Street Advisory Board as part of a certified downtown professional course she is completing. Cook outlined the board's organizational alignment, bylaws and expected deliverables.
Chairwoman Baity requested a bylaw revision clarifying continuing board service until reappointment; Cook noted the requested change. Baity moved to adopt the advisory-board framework contingent on that bylaw update; Lowry seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Taylor Smith also updated members on other façade projects: Milltown Bath & Candle is expected to be ready for reimbursement by late summer, and a representative from Maple Mills confirmed his project will begin within about 90 days. Smith circulated a list of "target properties" and urged board members to contact potential applicants because funding for the 2026 cycle remains available.
