Thomaston HPC approves streamlined sign for BOSS at 211 S. Center Street

Taylor J. Smith, Thomaston’s Economic Development Director, reported the Historic Preservation Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for 211 S. Center Street on June 8, allowing the business to replace its exterior sign.
Business owner Michelle Myers said the proposed sign measured 8' x 3' and originally included the lines "Business, Office, School, Stationary," "Printing, Packing, & Shipping" and "Authorized Ship Center." The commission and Ms. Myers discussed concerns the sign was overly wordy and offered streamlined alternatives.
After referring to the Design Guidelines (pg. 97) regarding text and legibility, the commission recommended removing "Business, Office, School, Stationary," tightening the BOSS lettering, rephrasing the service line to "Print, Pack, Ship," and separating lines with colored dots to improve readability. Commissioner Ted Kandler moved to adopt the recommendation; Chelsea Fallin seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
The approval allows the business to proceed with the revised sign design; the commission did not record additional conditions beyond the agreed design recommendations.
