Truman will cover FICA and workers' comp for summer baseball employees after council vote

After discussing higher wages and liability for non-city property work, the council voted unanimously to have the city pay FICA and workers' compensation for summer baseball employees and asked the association to require supervisor approval of timecards going forward.
The Truman City Council voted Aug. 19 to have the city cover FICA and workers’ compensation for summer baseball employees for the current season.
Chris Studer, representing the Baseball Association, told the council wages were higher this year, likely because weather required additional field maintenance. Councilors expressed concerns about supervisory oversight and possible liability when employees work on non-city property. The city attorney will provide an opinion and a copy will be sent to Monte Rohman for further review.
Councilor Ron Kelley moved to approve city coverage of payroll taxes and workers’ compensation for this year; Councilor Patty Truax seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote. Council asked that, going forward, a supervisor sign off on timecards before submission to the city for payment to reduce future disputes about hours and liability.
