Council directs draft of three-year police chief contract after closed-session negotiations

The council reopened the meeting at 8:05 p.m. and approved the direction to draft the contract, which will take effect upon mutual endorsement.
Separately, council members discussed a renewal of the police services contract with the City of Northrop for 2025. Staff noted the current proposed rate increase was from $50 to $55 per hour but that the cost of providing service is considerably higher; the council asked staff to send a letter proposing $64.46 per hour for 2025 with a further increase the following year to better reflect cost of service.
Councilor Ron Kelley moved and Councilor Patty Truax seconded the motion to instruct the city attorney to draft the police chief contract; the motion passed with all ayes.
The council did not specify additional terms beyond hourly rate and the 4% annual adjustments. The next steps are drafting the agreement and returning it for council approval once the parties have reviewed and signed the document.
