Council delays alley vacation after resident raises boundary concerns

Resident Russell Gerard said he objected to the portion of the alley as drafted and asked whether removing that portion from the legal description would resolve his concern. Mayor Solum said the city could change the legal description to remove the disputed portion and bring the revised item back to the next council meeting for a vote.
Gerard asked whether the vacation could be shifted more to the west to better suit his preference; council members said the surveyor recommended keeping the alley alignment uniform for both of John Sylling’s buildings and did not recommend shifting it. After that exchange, Gerard indicated agreement with the council’s approach to revise the legal description.
Neighbor Doug Remme asked if his adjacent property could be surveyed as well. Clerk/Administrator Jana Elton told Remme that any private property boundary dispute between residents would be a civil matter and recommended that he privately hire a surveyor; she explained the city’s involvement is limited to the portion of land that is city-owned alley space. No formal decision or vote was taken; the council directed staff to consult the city attorney and return the item to the next regular meeting for further action.
