Union City approves part-time police hire to boost coverage

Councilors discussed cost and coverage; Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits and that a part-time hire would cost less than the full-time allocation.
Councilor Joyce moved to hire Fye and Councilor Osborn seconded; the motion carried unanimously with six councilors present. The police chief, David Pernice, reviewed recent calls for service and training undertaken by officers and said the new part-time hire would help provide additional coverage during busy or extended calls.
Implementation steps recorded by the council include processing hire paperwork and coordinating schedules within the police department. The council did not record a vote tally by individual names beyond noting the motion carried unanimously.
