Commission hears updates on Tallassee roundabout, murals and public-art fabrications

Staff briefed the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission on a slate of public‑art projects and upcoming artist calls at the Jan. 12 meeting.
Tatiana Veneruso reported that the Tallassee roundabout artist call closed in November; a two‑part selection panel is scheduled for Jan. 22 and Feb. 26, and the panel will select three finalists to develop site-specific proposals. Veneruso said the Poet Laureate call produced eight applications and that the selection panel will convene later in the week.
Several mural initiatives and fabrication projects were discussed. The Morton mural RFQ will be issued this week; a Costa Building mural could be installed as early as this month, and staff expect an artist talk to coincide with installation. The Firefly Trail sculpture is in fabrication for an Indian Hills/Spring Valley location, and staff anticipate final engineering drawings from St. Udio for Bishop Park gates this week. Community Center mural artists for Lay Park and Heard Park were selected in October; staff reported contracts are still pending.
The commission was also told that an Animal Services mural call will be limited to participants in the Public Art Training Cohort (about 40 people) and will be a traditional RFP with a $2,000 budget. Staff said a visual project update will be shared at the next meeting.
These project updates will inform upcoming calls for artists, contractor coordination, and outreach to neighborhood stakeholders as each project moves toward final design and installation.
