Council seeks maintenance records before signing new lease with Council on Aging

City of Oglethorpe council members pressed Norman Graves of the Council on Aging for records and repairs related to the Senior Citizens building before signing a new lease. Mayor Daniels asked for an update and said council members had found multiple maintenance issues during a walkthrough; Graves said the roof needed replacement and offered to split the cost with the city.
Council Member Moore said the building “hasn’t seen an ounce of maintenance in a good fifteen years” and expressed concern for the safety of seniors who use the facility. Chief Breletic listed additional problems observed during his tour, including damaged tile, a nonworking bathroom sink, and an untidy electrical room. Graves responded that he had fixed items on the list provided by the council and said he would supply documentation of repairs.
Councilors asked for records covering the last five to ten years to determine whether preventative maintenance responsibilities in the lease had been met. Mr. Graves said he would provide the requested records at the April 24, 2025 work session prior to the meeting so the council could review them before signing a contract. No formal determination or new lease was approved at the April 3 work session.
The council’s next step is to review the maintenance records Mr. Graves will provide and revisit the contract and any required repairs at the April 24 work session.
