Granby Board of Finance trims FY2026-27 budget by $500,000, schedules new hearing and referendum

The Granby Board of Finance voted unanimously May 5 to reduce the proposed FY2026-27 budget by $500,000 and scheduled a third public hearing for May 11 and a third referendum for May 18.
The action followed the failure of a second budget referendum on May 4. Vice Chairman Thomas Proctor moved and Board member William Kennedy seconded the motion, which passed 5-0-0. The motion adjusted the budget by reducing the Board of Education request by $300,000 and recognizing $200,000 in revenue from supplemental state education aid.
Board members described a range of views during discussion. Some supported targeted reductions to the Board of Education budget in response to voter feedback; others cautioned that more significant cuts could harm municipal services and create risks for future budgets. The board also approved routine minutes from April 21 and April 27 by unanimous votes earlier in the meeting. The third public hearing on the revised FY2026-27 budget is scheduled for Monday, May 11, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The third referendum will be held Monday, May 18, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room. The Board of Finance will hold its next regular meeting immediately after the May 11 public hearing.
