The Martin County Board of Commissioners on May 14 authorized county staff to continue pursuing a paramedic services program after a detailed cost outline from County Manager Drew Batts.
Batts told the board the projected recurring cost to operate an eight‑paramedic program is $951,868 per year and that quick-response vehicles (QRVs) would add approximately $402,665 in vehicle costs; staff is seeking a Golden Leaf grant (requested amount $361,500) and additional philanthropic support from the Cannon Foundation to offset startup expenses. Batts said the program would standardize EMS reporting and billing among local providers to increase revenue capture and operational consistency.
The board voted unanimously (5-0) to allow staff to continue pursuing the program and to pursue the grant applications described. No appropriation of county general funds for the recurring operating cost was made at the May 14 meeting; funding decisions will follow the grant process and future board action.
Ending: Staff will pursue grant funding and return with implementation details and any required budget requests.
