Auditors for Malden & Jenkins told the Fernandina Beach City Commission on March 18 that they issued an unmodified (clean) opinion on the city’s annual comprehensive financial report, meaning they found the financial statements presented fairly in all material respects.
The auditor, introduced during the meeting as a representative of Malden & Jenkins, said the engagement also included a federal single‑audit because the city received approximately $1,100,000 in federal funds this year. He reported no current‑year findings, no deficiencies or material weaknesses, and no problems with the use of those federal funds.
The auditor praised the city’s finance staff—including recent leadership changes in the finance department—for assisting the process and said the city’s general fund and overall fund activity appear to be in good shape. He noted the city’s total net position rose by about $3.3 million year over year.
Although there were no audit findings, the auditor called out cybersecurity as an area to maintain focus on. He recommended ongoing testing and vigilance to reduce the risk of future incidents that could affect financial controls and public confidence.
The presentation concluded with an offer from the firm to answer commissioner questions; no follow‑up findings were raised by the commission during the meeting. The commission thanked the auditor and accepted the presentation.
