Ocilla council adopts proclamations, surplus resolution and hears resident requests for speed bumps and cameras

Ocilla — The Ocilla City Council on Oct. 20 adopted a proclamation declaring Nov. 2, 2025, as Retired Educators Day in Georgia and approved a proclamation honoring Josephine Spaulding Davis’s 101st birthday, proclaiming Oct. 23, 2025, as 'Josephine Spaulding Davis Day' in Ocilla. Council also adopted a Surplus Resolution.
Mayor Melvin D. Harper II read both proclamations during the meeting. Council Member Patrice Manley moved to adopt the Davis proclamation; Mayor Pro Tem Chris Paulk seconded and the motion passed with Paulk, Manley and Moses voting in favor. Mayor Pro Tem Chris Paulk later moved to adopt a Surplus Resolution; Council Member Lemora Moses seconded and the motion passed.
In department and council reports, Utilities Director Bruce Wilder told the council citizens had requested speed bumps on Lakewood Drive and Kirk Lane; he said he would coordinate with Council Member Lisa Cook. Council Member Patrice Manley asked Wilder to investigate standing water in ditches on 7th Street after the next rainfall so staff can see the issue. Council Member Lemora Moses reported illegal dumping on 5th Street since dumpsters closed and asked whether cameras could be installed; Chief Ashley Jones said he would install deer cameras in the area. Moses also encouraged participation in the birthday parade honoring Ms. Spaulding Davis.
Council members also asked the public to keep absent Council Member Lisa Cook and her family in their prayers. The meeting adjourned after the business of the evening.
