Chrisney council amends weed ordinance, introduces labor-rate ordinance and directs enforcement on code violations

At its July 14 meeting the Chrisney Town Council moved to tighten local weed‑control rules and introduced a separate ordinance to revise town labor rates.

Council members voted to amend Ordinance #2004-4, reducing the maximum allowable height for weeds or rank vegetation from 12 inches to 10 inches and reducing the compliance period after notice from 10 days to 7 days. The motion was made by Greg and seconded by Mason; minutes state the motion carried and Andrew will prepare the formal ordinance language for the next meeting.

The council also introduced Ordinance #2025-5, which would revise labor rates for town services; members approved a motion (moved by Greg, seconded by Mason) to publish the ordinance and consider final passage at the council’s next meeting.

On code enforcement matters, Chris reported that the owner of 54 E. North Street decided to sell the property to North Spencer County School Corporation; the school corporation supplied a scope of work and a demolition timeline and the council approved that timeline while noting enforcement responsibilities will continue. John reported complaints about 29 E. High Street suggesting occupancy without a final inspection and permit renewal; council directed John to coordinate with Andrew. Council also discussed longstanding sidewalk obstructions (campers, boats and vehicles) and asked Chris to survey other towns’ ordinances and procedures because Chris noted the town’s removal authority dates to a 1916 ordinance.

Andrew will present draft ordinance language for the weed amendment at the next meeting. The minutes do not record roll-call vote counts; they record motions as "carried."
