Carla Sullivan Deli, past president and one of the founders of the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network, told the City Council on March 5 that her volunteer organization provides no‑cost personal preparedness training and community outreach across the valley.
"We teach English, Spanish ... mainly personal preparedness, how to survive and thrive," Sullivan Deli said, noting CVDPN trained about 1,700 residents in the past two months and provides ready‑to‑go bags and free community classes funded by grants and donations. She asked the city to link to the network's materials on municipal web pages and to invite CVDPN to offer trainings at city facilities and homeowners' associations.
The presentation framed the group's work as complementary to first responders: Sullivan Deli said volunteers "come in after them" to assist residents first responders cannot reach immediately and emphasized that better household preparedness can reduce deaths and speed recovery after disasters.
Council members responded with brief thanks and encouraged follow‑up coordination. Sullivan Deli left a sample preparedness bag for council members to see and said the group will follow up to schedule trainings and coordination meetings with staff.
