Royston mayor announces city attorney Doug Ashworth will retire Dec. 31

Mayor Keith Turman told the Royston City Council on Sept. 16 that City Attorney Doug Ashworth will retire from practicing law effective Dec. 31, 2024 and thanked him for his work for the city.
Doug Ashworth addressed the council and said it had been "a privilege to serve 11 years of service as the assistant city attorney and city attorney for the city." Ashworth told the council his reason for retiring is to assist as a caregiver for his wife and said he had provided a template request for proposals to City Manager Lanier Dunn for use in identifying a successor.
Turman offered public thanks to Ashworth for his service. The minutes record that Ashworth provided lead time to the council and that a template RFP was supplied to the city manager; the minutes do not specify a hiring timeline for a replacement or the particulars of any request for proposals.
