Royston council confirms Brooks Moorhead as chief of police, 6-0

The Royston City Council unanimously confirmed Brooks Moorhead as the city’s next chief of police on Sept. 16, 2024.
City Manager Lanier Dunn told the council that Section 3.10(e) of the Charter of the City of Royston requires council confirmation of department-head appointments and read the recommendation naming Moorhead. "I now submit to you the name of Brooks Moorhead to be confirmed as Chief of Police of the City of Royston effective September 23, 2024," Dunn said.
Councilman Matt Fields moved to accept the manager’s recommendation; Councilman Kenneth Roach seconded. The motion carried, recorded as a 6-0 vote.
The manager told the council the police chief position became vacant on Aug. 29, 2024, and that candidates were evaluated through a competitive process that included in-person interviews with the manager and with the mayor and council. After the confirmation, Mayor Keith Turman asked Moorhead to stand, shook his hand and welcomed him as the new chief.
The action completes the council’s confirmation step under the city charter; the appointment is effective Sept. 23, 2024. The council did not record individual roll-call votes in the meeting minutes, only the final tally of 6-0.
